Numerology is the study of the symbolic meanings traditionally given to numbers. In the widely used Pythagorean system, the most important number is the Life Path number, calculated from your full date of birth.

The method

There are a few ways to add up a date. The method we use reduces each part separately, which avoids losing master numbers along the way:

  1. Reduce the day to a single digit (or a master number).
  2. Reduce the month the same way.
  3. Reduce the year the same way.
  4. Add the three results and reduce the total.

To “reduce” a number, add its digits together and repeat until you reach a single digit — unless you reach 11, 22 or 33, the master numbers, which are traditionally kept as they are.

A worked example

For a birth date of 29 August 1994:

  • Day: 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 (a master number, so kept)
  • Month: August = 8
  • Year: 1994 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 4 = 23 → 2 + 3 = 5
  • Total: 11 + 8 + 5 = 24 → 2 + 4 = 6

What the numbers traditionally mean

  • 1 — independence and leadership
  • 2 — cooperation and sensitivity
  • 3 — creativity and expression
  • 4 — structure and hard work
  • 5 — freedom and change
  • 6 — responsibility and care
  • 7 — reflection and inner wisdom
  • 8 — ambition and material mastery
  • 9 — compassion and completion
  • 11, 22, 33 — master numbers, traditionally associated with heightened intuition, large-scale building and selfless service

Different methods, different answers

Some numerologists add all the digits of the date in one go. Usually this gives the same result, but sometimes it produces a different master number or none at all. Chaldean numerology, also popular in India, uses a different system for names. If you see a different Life Path number elsewhere, that is likely why.
